The true face of Unemployment in the UK 7.83million
The following figures are taken from the Office for National Statistics and reflect the total number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance across the United Kingdom as of March 12th 2009, they do not include people claiming the range of other out of work benefits in the UK.
Scotland: 95,959
Wales: 60,629
London: 142,793
South East: 111,480
East: 88,636
South West: 72,014
East Midlands: 88,208
West Midlands: 133,927
North East: 66,061
North West: 148,863
Yorks & Humber: 116,060
Total: 1,156,895
As we know from yesterdays released figures the official figures there are 2.2million unemployed across the United Kingdom, however if you then take in to account the numbers of people claiming other benefits such as Incapacity Benefit the figures are much higher a quote from the Office for National Statistics latest Labour Market Report for you to mull over
“The inactivity rate for people of working age was 20.7 per cent for the three months to March 2009, down 0.1 over the previous quarter and down 0.2 over the year. The number of economically inactive people of working age fell by 29,000 over the quarter and by 43,000 over the year to reach 7.83 million.”
As you can see for yourself the actual rate of inactivity “unemployment” in the United Kingdom stands at 20.7% of the UK population “of working age” with a total figure of some 7.83 million people not working and claiming some form of state benefit.
If you then take in to account the number of job vacancies currently available in the UK which according to the latest Office for National Statistics Report:
“There were 455,000 job vacancies in the three months to April 2009, down 51,000 over the previous quarter and down 232,000 over the year. These are the lowest vacancy figures since comparable records began in 2001. All sectors have shown falls in vacancies over the quarter with the largest fall occurring in finance and business services (down 17,000).”
You can see just how difficult it is becoming for those people claiming Job Seekers Allowance to find alternative employment, the figures are not looking good for the UK and according to the most recent estimates the numbers of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance is expected to rise to over 4million by 2012.
Whilst the Government like to tell you about just the people claiming Job Seekers Allowance the real fact is that there are over 7million people out of work in the United Kingdom.
A stark reminder of the real face of UK unemployment.
