Career Planning

What is Career Planning?

One common misconception is that career planning is a one time process that is usually done at the end of obtaining formal educational qualification. But the truth is career planning is a lifelong process.

Its importance can not be over emphasised as how effective you do your career planning determines how successfully you lead your life.

Career planning covers the following

  • Selecting a career/profession
  • Getting a job in the chosen profession
  • Managing job changes
  • Career advancement

And the final retiring stage can also be considered a part of career planning. Career Planning – The 4 Step Process. In effect career planning is a 4 step process. The crucial steps involved in career planning are:

  1. Self Assessment
  2. Analysing the job options
  3. Selecting the right job
  4. Setting the action to get the selected job

Before you lay your eyes on your dream job, you have to assess yourself carefully. You need to know where your strengths are, what are your skills and knowledge; your qualification, values and interests. Once you clearly know your interests and abilities, start searching for the job options that match the results of your self assessment.

Evaluating the different job options considering their futuristic value is very important in planning your career advancement. Once you selected the right job for you, after analysing all the important parameters, the final step in your career planning process is to act to reach your goal-getting the job
